Mamshit National Park – Nabatean City in the Heart of the Desert
Mamshit National Park is one of the most impressive sites in the Negev, offering a rare glimpse into the architecture and culture of the Nabateans. Mamshit, established in the 1st century BCE, is one of four Nabatean cities in the Negev that were declared a UNESCO World Heritage site due to its well-preserved ruins and its reconstructed marketplace.
Highlights of the Site:
- Remains of a Nabatean City – Residential buildings, shops, and public buildings that have been exceptionally well-preserved.
- Byzantine Churches – The Church of Saint Nicholas and the Church of the Holy Martyrs, with unique mosaic floors.
- City Gate and Tower – A fortified Roman gate from the 6th century CE.
- The Wealthy Man's House and Nabato's House – Luxurious buildings with inner courtyards, stairways, and ancient frescoes.
- The Nabatean "Market" – A reconstructed street with shops from the Nabatean period, where an authentic market is held during holidays.
- Ancient Water Reservoirs and Dams – A sophisticated water system that allowed the residents of Mamshit to grow crops in the desert.
- The Fortress and British Camel Police Station – A panoramic view from the highest point in the city.
Historical Background:
Mamshit was established as a Nabatean trading station on the Incense Route, one of the most important trade routes in the ancient world. During the Roman and Byzantine periods, the city thrived thanks to advanced agriculture and the breeding of fine horses. In the 4th century CE, the city's inhabitants converted to Christianity, and magnificent churches were built. The city was abandoned in the 7th century with the Muslim conquest.
