Herodium National Park – A Testimony to King Herod’s Legacy
Herodium National Park is one of the most impressive archaeological sites in Israel, combining history, architecture, and breathtaking landscapes. The site, located at the edge of the Judean Desert, rises about 758 meters above sea level, offering views of Jerusalem, Bethlehem, and the Judean Desert. King Herod built one of the most magnificent architectural projects of the Roman period here, which served as both his summer palace and his burial site.
What’s at the site?
- The Royal Palace and Theatre – Herod's summer palace included pools, gardens, and impressive luxurious structures. The small Roman theatre on site, with a seating capacity of about 300, reflects the cultural life of the period.
- The Monumental Arch Corridor – A unique passage system with advanced architectural design.
- Herod’s Tomb – Based on the findings of archaeologist Ehud Netzer, this is the burial site of King Herod, as described by the historian Josephus Flavius.
- Hideout Tunnels – Underground systems from the Bar Kokhba revolt period (132–136 CE), used as shelters for the rebels.
- Lower Herodium – Ruins from the Byzantine period, including three churches and residential buildings.
Historical Background
Herodium was built around 28 BCE by King Herod, who ruled Judea under the Roman Empire. After his death, the hill became a central site in the Bar Kokhba revolt (132–136 CE), with the rebels utilizing the caves and tunnels carved into the hill. During the Byzantine period, a village with churches and other buildings was established on the site, which served the residents until the 7th century CE.
Geography and Landscape
Herodium is located in the desert fringe area, a transitional zone between the Judean Mountains and the Judean Desert. The landscape is unique, blending rocky mountains, natural forests, and arid land. Due to its height, visitors can enjoy a breathtaking view of the Judean Mountains to the west and the Judean Desert and Dead Sea to the east.
