Herodium National Park is one of the most impressive archaeological sites in Israel, combining history, architecture, and breathtaking landscapes. The site, located at the edge of the Judean Desert, rises about 758 meters above sea level, offering views of Jerusalem, Bethlehem, and the Judean Desert. King Herod built one of the most magnificent architectural projects of the Roman period here, which served as both his summer palace and his burial site.
Herodium was built around 28 BCE by King Herod, who ruled Judea under the Roman Empire. After his death, the hill became a central site in the Bar Kokhba revolt (132–136 CE), with the rebels utilizing the caves and tunnels carved into the hill. During the Byzantine period, a village with churches and other buildings was established on the site, which served the residents until the 7th century CE.
Herodium is located in the desert fringe area, a transitional zone between the Judean Mountains and the Judean Desert. The landscape is unique, blending rocky mountains, natural forests, and arid land. Due to its height, visitors can enjoy a breathtaking view of the Judean Mountains to the west and the Judean Desert and Dead Sea to the east.
It is recommended to check the opening hours on the Nature and Parks Authority website before your visit.
The visit to Herodium can be combined with a trip to the Dead Sea area, Masada, and Jerusalem.
Herodium National Park is not just a historical site – it is a journey back in time to the world of Herod, one of the most influential rulers in the history of the Land of Israel.
