Avdat National Park is a World Heritage site in the heart of the Negev Mountains, preserving the remains of the ancient Nabatean city of Avdat. The city, named after the Nabatean king Obodas II, was established in the 4th century BCE and was a central stop along the "Incense Route" – a trade route linking ancient Arabia to the Mediterranean Sea. The park offers a fascinating visit among archaeological finds, breathtaking desert landscapes, and a rich historical story.
Avdat was built as a central stop on the "Incense Route" that connected the Arabian Peninsula to the port of Gaza. The Nabateans, who were experts in desert survival, made Avdat a thriving economic and agricultural center. During the Byzantine period (4th–7th centuries CE), the city reached its peak, with the construction of magnificent public buildings, sophisticated water systems, and impressive churches. In 630 CE, the city was damaged by a severe earthquake and was shortly thereafter conquered by the Muslims.
Avdat is located above the Zin Stream canyon, a stunning and beautiful desert wadi. Nearby, there are many desert springs, including Ein Avdat, Ein Ma'arif, and Ein Mor, which attract desert animals and unique vegetation.
The national park is located on Route 40, between Mitzpe Ramon and Be'er Sheva, near Ben-Gurion University. Access is very convenient and clearly marked from the main road.
