Bet Shean National Park: The Roman Metropolis Frozen in Time

Bet Shean National Park is widely recognized as one of the most spectacular and historically significant archaeological landmarks in the world. Often referred to as the Pompeii of the East: this ancient city was the capital of the Roman and Byzantine province of Palaestina Secunda and a leading member of the Decapolis league. Visiting Bet Shean National Park through the Nativa travel portal offers a unique window into a high classical civilization that was suddenly interrupted by a massive earthquake in seven hundred forty nine AD. As a protected natural area and a cultural heritage site: Bet Shean National Park stands as a world class tourist destination where massive temples: grand colonnaded streets: and enormous bathhouses reveal the architectural genius of the past within the magnificent Bet Shean National Park.

Key Archaeological Highlights and Visitor Features:

  • The Roman Theater: The primary feature and best preserved ancient theater in Israel. Built in the late 2nd century AD: it once accommodated seven thousand spectators within the grounds of Bet Shean National Park. Visitors can explore the original stone tiers and imagine the grand performances that took place against the backdrop of the twenty one meter high stage wall. This venue is still used for cultural events in Bet Shean National Park today.
  • The Western Bathhouse: A massive complex covering nearly ten thousand square meters within Bet Shean National Park. This social hub of the Byzantine era features eight large halls: four outdoor pools: and a gymnastics yard (Palaestra). While walking through Bet Shean National Park: guests can see the heating channels under the floors and the elaborate mosaic decorations that once defined this luxury center.
  • Cardo and Decumanus (Ancient Streets): Bet Shean National Park features two of the most impressive Roman streets ever excavated. Palladius Street: the reconstructed Cardo: is lined with grey granite columns and paved with basalt stones. Exploring Bet Shean National Park reveals the deep ruts left by ancient chariot wheels: a silent testimony to centuries of vibrant commerce.
  • The Sigma and Tyche Mosaic: A semi circular plaza that served as a shopping and entertainment center within Bet Shean National Park. One of its rooms contains a world famous mosaic of Tyche: the city’s goddess of fortune: depicted with a turreted crown and a horn of plenty. This artwork is a highlight for all visitors to Bet Shean National Park as featured on the Nativa portal.
  • The Fallen Temple and Nymphaeum: At the heart of Bet Shean National Park: visitors can see the remains of a monumental Roman temple. The massive columns: each weighing twenty five tons: remain exactly where they fell during the great earthquake. Adjacent to the temple is the Nymphaeum: a public fountain that provided water and decorative beauty to the city center.
  • Tel Bet Shean: The archaeological mound overlooking the Roman city. Climbing the steep stairs within Bet Shean National Park leads to the site of the biblical city: offering spectacular panoramic viewpoints over the Valley of Springs and the mountains of Gilead.
